The Donner Party

The sheriff’s deputies pulled a fierce Miller Burton away from Katie.

Nancy peeked over the human chain to observe Katie. Her mouth had dropped open, and her eyes were flashing. This latest outburst against her seemed to be the last straw.

“Number one, you don’t own this lake,” Katie snapped back at Burton. The crowd suddenly fell silent as everyone listened to Katie’s response. “And number two, the skiers and boaters have helped your cause, not hurt it,” she went on. “Nobody is more careful than we are about following boating rules and limiting our use of the lake. That’s more than I can say for your group. You don’t follow any rules!”

A few of the spectators began clapping in support of Katie. As she noticed the crowd watching her, her face turned crimson. Still angry, she marched out of the water with careful splashes, leaving Burton behind in her wake.

Nancy saw Mrs. Cobb hurry over to the edge of the sand where Katie was now standing. Taking the ski out of her daughter’s hand, she said quietly, “Come on. You’ll get cold standing here.”

Meanwhile, the deputies were leading Burton away. Katie’s spunky response seemed to have sobered him a bit. The protesters were breaking up, and the group holding the banner moved up the beach, still chanting, “Save the lake now!”

“That guy can’t say anything he wants to me,” Nancy heard Katie exclaim to her mother. “I’m not a nature killer, and I’m sick of being made to feel like the enemy.”

“I agree,” Mrs. Cobb said. “But a confrontation here will only aggravate these people. Besides, you just had a terrific run. Don’t let Miller Burton ruin that.”

Mrs. Cobb led Katie over to where Nancy, Bess, George, and Jackie were standing on shore.

Just then Mr. Cobb ran up to the group. “Honey, are you all right?” he asked Katie. She nodded, and her father scowled. “These environmental terrorists were blocking my way. At least you got in a good slalom run before they barged in.”

“Good?” Bess cut in. She smiled at Katie. “It was great. I was sure you were going to fall when you were leaning over those buoys. But you timed it all perfectly.”

Nancy and George looked at Bess in surprise. “Bess Marvin, waterskiing buff?” George said in disbelief.

Bess tossed her head. “You never know,” she said mysteriously.

George shook her head with a smile.

“Well, I’m sure glad you’re okay,” Jackie said to Katie. “I need to get something to eat before trick starts. Take it easy, okay?” she said, turning from the group with a sketchy wave.

“Thanks, Jackie,” Katie said.

Nancy, Bess, and George joined Mr. and Mrs. Cobb and Katie as they headed up the beach. In a low, worried voice, Katie’s mom explained to her husband what had happened to the ski.

“This was no equipment failure,” Mr. Cobb said seriously. Nancy nodded. “Someone had to have done this on purpose—someone like Miller Burton,” he added bitterly. “He’s got to be the one behind all this. The man is obsessed with stopping Katie.
